Icarus: Greek Urn Floral Still Life with Irises on Orange

Birds of paradise felt somehow appropriate for poor Icarus, tasting freedom for the first time and also the last. The tablecloth on this piece represents both the sky and the sea below, with birds wheeling about unaffected bu the tragedy occurring on the vase. Irises, in my work, always represent brief escapes from darkness, and can be seen in the Persephone vase too.
